Chip or Putt?

When your ball is on the short-cut fringe surrounding the green, your choice of chipping or putting depends on several factors.

First, you must appreciate that the main problem is distance control, not direction control. Observe your lie and the length and texture of the fringe itself. If the ground between the ball and the hole is level and the surface of the fringe is short and smooth, you probably will want to use your putter. When that is the case, you can expect a fairly true roll and can accurately estimate how much speed the ball will have when it rolls onto the green.

So when, if ever, should you chip the ball? If the fringe is rather long and wiry, you probably will be better off chipping. It's easier to judge how hard to hit the shot. A ball's behavior is more predictable if it is flown directly onto the green rather than rolled through longish grass.
I also suggest you try chipping when faced with a downhill shot. You can hit the ball a little softer than with the putter, aiding your ability to control the distance the ball rolls. You also get a little backspin when you chip as opposed to none when you putt, and that helps slow the ball as it rolls down a slope.

The final decision on whether to chip or putt varies from golfer to golfer. Go out to the practice green and experiment. You'll develop a feel for how different shots behave, and the next time your ball is on the fringe you'll have the necessary touch to make the right choice.
