The Origins of Golf

The origin of golf is today open to debate among the French and Scottish - and also the Chinese.

Golf is widely thought to be a Scottish invention, becasue the game has been mentioned in at least two 15th-century laws thatprohibit the playing of the game of "gowf".

However, some scholars suggest that this actually refers to another different game which is pretty much akin to shinty or hurling, or even to what we know as modern field hockey. They also point out that a game of putting a small ball into a hole in the ground and doing so using golf clubs was also played in the Netherlands in the 17th-century. The term golf is thought to have actually originated most liekly from a Germanic word meaning "club".

In January 2006 however, debate once again was provoked over who invented golf. Some Recent evidence that was unearthed by Prof. Ling Hongling of Lanzhou University in China suggest that a game very similar to golf was played actually in China around the Southern Tang Dynasty, which makes it 500 years before golf was first ever mentioned in Scotland.

The Dongxuan records from the Song Dynasty actually describe a game known as chuiwan and also even includes drawings. The game was played with 10 clubs including a cuanbang, pubang, and shaobang - clubs that are comparable to a modern day driver, two-wood, and three-wood. The Clubs were inlaid with beautiful jade and gold, which suggests that golf was for the affluent. The Chinese archive also includes references to a Tang Dynasty official who had asked that his daughter dig holes for him as a target. Lin has suggested that golf was exported to Europe and then from Europe to Scotland by Mongolian travellers around the late Middle Ages.

A Spokeman for the St Adrews Royal and Ancient Golf Club said "Stick and ball games have been around for many centuries, but golf as we know it today, played over 18 holes, clearly originated in Scotland."

The oldest known playing golf course still exisiting in the world today is The Old Links at Musselburgh. There is evidence that golf was playedthere at on Musselburgh Links in 1672. Reputedly also, Mary Queen of Scots reputedly played there in 1567.

Golf courses did not always have eighteen holes. The St Andrews Links in Scotland occupy a narrow strip of land that stretches along the sea. Back as early as the 15th century, the golfers at St. Andrews had established a customary route that stretched through the undulating terrain, and made their way playing to holes whose locations were of course dictated by the local topography. This course that emerged featured eleven holes that were laid out from end to end. The started at the clubhouse and went to the far end of the property. A golfer played the holes out, then turned around, and then played the holes in again, making for a grand total of 22 holes.

In 1764, ity was decided that several of the holes were too short, and were combined. it was then that the number of holes was reduced from 11 to nine, so that a complete round now comprised 18 holes.
